The first time I saw Caligula’s Horse was a sold out show in The Basement’s small room back in 2016. I wasn’t too familiar with them but was blown away by their performance. Eight years later, they were back at The Basement, but this time in the big room.
But up first were Reliqa who, despite missing their bassist, put on impressive show. I’ve listend to their album Eventide since seeing them; it’s really good. Highly recommend checking them out, especially if you get the chance to see them live.
Caligula’s Horse are a bit of a rarity in prog metal: they’re better live than recorded. In part that’s Jim Grey’s showmanship and clear love be being in front of a crowd, but honestly, I just enjoy how they sound more; there’s an energy and intensity that I don’t quite get from the recordings.
I’ll see CHorse every time they come to town; I hope I don’t have to wait 8 years for the next one.
