Closing out my previous post with “hopefully I can make that happen every month or so” seems to have been the exact incantation required to send Canberra into a 3 month lockdown. Fun times.
Strangely, the first post-lockdown gig I made it to was a lot like the last one - B.C. opening for Witchskull at The Basement, though this time the middle support was Charlotte and the Harlots.
I had a kid who couldn’t settle to sleep, so unfortunately turned up late and missed most of B.C. From what I did see, and what my mate said, they put on another solid, fun set.
I listened to a little bit of Charlotte and the Harlots on Spotify in the lead-up. As someone who was completely obsessed with Magic Dirt circa Life Was Better, it went down pretty well. They really won me over live, though. The eponymous Charlotte is charismatic and vivacious, and combined with the lighting, that made for a great set to shoot.
A good contingent of the audience seemed to be existing fans - my mate was a bit worried that half the crowd were only there for the Harlots and would clear out before Witchskull started.
The Harlots also won “heartwarming metal move the night” when they brought Charlotte’s dad on stage for a song.
The crowd did not, in fact, clear out before Witchskull.
True to form, they put on an excellent show in impossible lighting. They seemed really pleased to be playing in front of a crowd again, and we were certainly glad to be watching.
Although the covid capacity restrictions had been slightly eased a couple of days prior, it was still a limited and fairly small crowd. But everyone was very much in the right spirit and a few brave and enthusiastic souls even managed to get a circle pit going (if you can make a circle out of 5 points…).
All in all it was a fantastic night, although like last time, more than a little weird to be out in public with other people again.
Not to jinx myself (again!), but in a couple of weeks I should be seeing Immorium, another local act whose latest album I’ve had on repeat recently.
